The 49ers robbed the room for Paul Jr.. Final grade: B-. The 49ers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Chris Paul Jr. fell into slot 190.
Wedig has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In No. 15 they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick46
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant in slot 46 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick60
Rnd2
Dylan Fairchild
A clean, defensible pick in the 60th pick with a little surplus value in Dylan Fairchild. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Jake Majors at pick 100 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jack Bech
Value with a capital V on Jack Bech in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick137
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
You do not let a tight end like Mason Taylor reach pick No. 137 and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick190
Rnd6
Chris Paul Jr.
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 15 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220
Rnd7
Jordan Hancock
Somehow Jordan Hancock was still sitting there in the 220th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick233
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ollie Gordon II in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
They reached into another round for Thor Griffith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick254
Rnd7
Trey Wedig
A big swing on Trey Wedig at slot 254, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
