Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The 49ers let Phillips fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Andru Phillips got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at Round 6, Pick 34. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

Reaching for Cole left real value on the table behind him. It is not that Stover is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Tyler Guyton
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a cornerstone up front, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63 Rnd2 Graham Barton
Graham Barton at slot 63 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94 Rnd3 Michael Hall Jr.
Michael Hall Jr. in No. 94 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick98 Rnd3 Cade Stover
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and tight end to take Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE that was not the priority.
Pick132 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
A tidy little value on Tommy Eichenberg in pick 132, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick176 Rnd6 Braelon Allen
A slide stopped in the 176th pick, with Braelon Allen worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick209 Rnd6 Andru Phillips
Andru Phillips at the 209th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick214 Rnd6 Javon Baker
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Javon Baker in pick No. 214, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Omar Brown
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Omar Brown at slot 215 is the proof. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick249 Rnd7 Myles Cole
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Myles Cole well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
