The steal of the weekend belongs to the 49ers and Gore Jr.: D-.

The phones were a trap the 49ers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. With interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. The McCaffrey reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.

The Gore Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

A tidy little value on Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 36, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.

They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kris Jenkins in the Round 2 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick90 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in pick No. 90. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick93 Rnd3 Kris Abrams-Draine
A tidy bit of business in Round 3, Pick 30, where Kris Abrams-Draine graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.

Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cam Hart adds a cornerback and leaves interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots untouched.

A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Johnny Wilson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.

A straight-up fair deal on Roger Rosengarten at pick No. 131, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.

Luke McCaffrey at the 139th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick176 Rnd6 Kamal Hadden
Kamal Hadden slid further than he should have, and No. 176 is lovely value for the cornerback. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.

Nice patience on Kendall Milton, who had no business lasting to the 215th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick251 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
Circle this one: Frank Gore Jr. at pick 251 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
