Somebody took the Vikings to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. Put together, it is a D-.
The cost of the Proctor reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. On value alone, Simpson makes the weekend a net positive.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 15 they get a run-stuffing presence up front. A real need, handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get a premier pass rusher, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid up for J.J. McCarthy at No. 35 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Guyton at Round 2, Pick 10 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on T'Vondre Sweat at the 46th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in slot 71; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Cedric Gray at par in pick No. 129, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A tidy little value on Cam Hart in the 140th pick, a step better than break-even. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They liked LaDarius Henderson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 148th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had Jaylin Simpson higher than slot 160, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Josh Proctor in the Round 5 slot, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Jaylan Ford went about where he belonged in pick No. 179. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Blake Watson at Round 7, Pick 10 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
