Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Bears bet the future on Penix Jr.. The board says D.

Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Bears, and the value they bled adds up to real damage.

Michael Penix Jr. is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Reaching for Robinson left real value on the table behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

It is not that Williams is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Malik Nabers
In the 3rd pick they get a true top target at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In pick 9 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Pick21 Rnd1 Tyler Nubin
A premium they did not need to pay, Tyler Nubin a notch or two before his time. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick34 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
No drama and no debate, Chop Robinson went about where he belonged in slot 34. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick48 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
They went early on Jackson Powers-Johnson in No. 48, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick67 Rnd3 Trey Benson
Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick79 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at pick No. 79 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick103 Rnd4 Cooper Beebe
They liked Cooper Beebe enough to skip the value, taking him in the 103rd overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick132 Rnd4 Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson in pick 132 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick134 Rnd4 James Williams
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots to take James Williams, a safety that was not the priority.
