Call it larceny. Lathan Ransom sat on the board until pick 214, and the Raiders did not need to be asked twice.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Cam Ward is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The Cornelius reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
They let Tate Ratledge come to them and pounced at slot 38. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Booker at pick 69 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ajani Cornelius this early at slot 73. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Evan Stewart in Round 4, Pick 4 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nicholas Singleton at the 141st overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Raheim Sanders at the 185th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid up for Conner Weigman at pick No. 212 when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Lathan Ransom in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
A big swing on Tony Grimes at No. 224, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
