When the story of this class is written, it opens with Willie Lampkin at the 234th overall pick, a reach of 85 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Everything downstream of Jayden Daniels depends on Jayden Daniels, and the building knows it.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 8 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
T.J. Tampa in slot 55 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They did well to land Ricky Pearsall in No. 77, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at pick No. 86 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dominick Puni is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A conviction pick on Darius Robinson at the 145th pick that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Frank Gore Jr. in slot 150 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Isaiah Davis well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Nathaniel Watson at the 210th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A minor itch, scratched.
Willie Lampkin at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, DeMonte Capehart in Round 7, Pick 24 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
