Some picks age like wine; Sam Hartman at the 235th overall pick will need to, sitting 31 spots clear of his grade.
With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on defensive back is the choice that costs them. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
Jer'Zhan Newton in the 14th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at the 42nd pick when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They did well to land Denzel Burke in slot 62, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick No. 84, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Khyree Jackson at defensive back with edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots open.
They paid sticker price for Ray Davis in pick 151, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
The board had cheaper options than Curtis Jacobs at pick No. 192, and it noticed. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Sam Hartman in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
