The Jasheen Davis selection is the head-turner. The Raiders reached 121 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Whatever Shedeur Sanders becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The McCord pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th overall pick they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
They jumped the gun on Donovan Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Elic Ayomanor this early at the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Jonah Coleman at pick 83, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Jasheen Davis at pick No. 124 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jeffrey Bassa in slot 158, miles early. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Hunter Wohler in the 196th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached into another round for Alfred Collins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
De'Corian Clark slipping to No. 214 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kyle McCord in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
