Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Raiders spent No. 199 on Tyrone Howell, a name most had 127 spots down the list. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Carson Beck is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Fifita. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Carson Beck. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Xavier Nwankpa at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board fumbled Isaiah Bond all the way to pick 71, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Anthony Belton at the 103rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Riley Leonard at pick No. 135 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steal is underselling it; Noah Fifita at slot 167 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Tyrone Howell at Round 7, Pick 7, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
