The war room fell hard for Cam Ward, and it showed at the 7th overall pick: 80 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.
Whatever Cam Ward becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Hit on Cam Ward and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 7 they get their guy under center for the next decade, a steep price for the projection.
They took Walter Nolen at par in pick 39, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Donovan Jackson at Round 3, Pick 7 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value said wait; Jasheen Davis in slot 103 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Maxwell Hairston in No. 135, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Marcus Mbow in the Round 6 slot, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Lander Barton at Round 7, Pick 7, and the board did not agree. A minor itch, scratched.
