The Bears found their guy under center in Penix Jr.: B+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bears reached some 63 spots for Brandon Coleman, and value like that does not grow back. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick No. 3 they get a true top target. A real need, handled.
Pick9
Rnd1
Michael Penix Jr.
In the 9th overall pick they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Nubin at the 34th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick36
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in Round 2, Pick 4 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick40
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson in pick 40 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick67
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in slot 67, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick68
Rnd3
Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland in slot 68 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
They reached into another round for Brenden Rice, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick122
Rnd4
Brandon Coleman
A big swing on Brandon Coleman at pick No. 122, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
