Draft Grade — Patriots

Klubnik should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a C.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Cade Klubnik slide 56 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Reaching for Cornelius left real value on the table behind him.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Hit on Kelvin Banks Jr. and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Kelvin Banks Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick34 Rnd2 James Pearce Jr.
They paid sticker price for James Pearce Jr. in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick37 Rnd2 Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at pick No. 37 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick66 Rnd3 Colston Loveland
A tidy little value on Colston Loveland in slot 66, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Pick85 Rnd3 Jabbar Muhammad
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jabbar Muhammad at the 85th overall pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick98 Rnd4 Nic Anderson
A conviction pick on Nic Anderson at the 98th pick that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick130 Rnd5 Cade Klubnik
They barely believed it either: Cade Klubnik still on the board at pick 130. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick194 Rnd7 Dasan McCullough
A slide stopped in No. 194, with Dasan McCullough worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
