Simon should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B-.

Call it larceny. Cody Simon sat on the board until the 221st pick, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

The cost of the Griffith reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In No. 3 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Pick39 Rnd2 Zy Alexander
They left a pile of value on the table to take Zy Alexander this early at pick 39. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick70 Rnd3 Jihaad Campbell
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 70 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick80 Rnd3 Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild in Round 3, Pick 16 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick106 Rnd4 Darrell Jackson Jr.
Darrell Jackson Jr. at the 106th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick141 Rnd5 Jayden Higgins
A straight-up fair deal on Jayden Higgins at pick No. 141, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick221 Rnd7 Cody Simon
Cody Simon at the 221st pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick223 Rnd7 Xavier Nwankpa
They barely believed it either: Xavier Nwankpa still on the board at the Round 7 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick235 Rnd7 Thor Griffith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Thor Griffith. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
