Call it larceny. Cody Simon sat on the board until the 221st pick, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

The cost of the Griffith reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

In No. 3 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.

They left a pile of value on the table to take Zy Alexander this early at pick 39. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.

A linebacker of that caliber at slot 70 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.

Dylan Fairchild in Round 3, Pick 16 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
