Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-

Grand theft in slot 217: the Patriots steal Simon and grade out a B-.

You could see the war room lean forward. Cody Simon at the Round 7 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.

They will need Frazier to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The Jauan Jennings deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau in the 38th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick77 Rnd3 Darien Porter
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at pick No. 77, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick99 Rnd3 Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at slot 99 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick104 Rnd4 David Walker
They reached a country mile for David Walker at No. 104, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick131 Rnd4 Vernon Broughton
A premium they did not need to pay, Vernon Broughton a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick143 Rnd5 Miles Frazier
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Miles Frazier well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217 Rnd7 Cody Simon
Cody Simon in Round 7, Pick 1 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick220 Rnd7 Rod Moore
They robbed the room for Rod Moore here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick238 Rnd7 Roc Taylor
They took Roc Taylor at par in Round 7, Pick 22, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
