Maye is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: A-. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Bears' quarterback, full stop.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Reaching for Lindberg left real value on the table behind him.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
However the rest shakes out, Hicks at that price is a win they earned.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In pick No. 7 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick27
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. in the 27th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick38
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan in slot 38 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Rod Moore
A tidy little value on Rod Moore in the 75th pick, a step better than break-even. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick77
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A curious use of pick 77. Edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick106
Rnd4
Cooper Beebe
No drama and no debate, Cooper Beebe went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 6. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick125
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at the Round 4 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick127
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
Fair-plus on Kris Abrams-Draine, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick146
Rnd5
Jaden Hicks
Somehow Jaden Hicks was still sitting there in the 146th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick232
Rnd7
Chad Lindberg
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Chad Lindberg. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
