The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
However the rest shakes out, Newton at that price is a win they earned. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get the face of the franchise, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 23rd pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value.
A tidy little value on Cole Bishop in Round 4, Pick 8, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 129 with a little surplus value in Johnny Wilson. The roster fit checks out.
Josh Newton in pick 157 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Jarrian Jones in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Walter Rouse at slot 177 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jordan Magee is a better player than No. 230 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Taking Caedan Wallace in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
