Somewhere a general manager is explaining how M.J. Devonshire got past him. The Raiders do not have to explain a thing at pick 229. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
If Raym pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 16 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They read the board right and Bo Nix was the payoff at the 44th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Christian Mahogany in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and MarShawn Lloyd at slot 112 is the proof. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a cornerback like Andru Phillips reach the 120th pick and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A quiet steal in pick No. 148: Jarrian Jones for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tykee Smith at pick 165 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A tidy bit of business in Round 5, Pick 35, where Walter Rouse graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Layden Robinson at pick 172 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ty'Ron Hopper at the 192nd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Andrew Raym in the 208th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Caedan Wallace slid further than he should have, and Round 7, Pick 3 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: M.J. Devonshire at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
