Markdel80yahoocom DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB
TradesB
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Xavier Thomas at the 214th overall pick is 64 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The Jordan value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. With interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in the 35th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick63
Rnd2
Christian Haynes
They liked Christian Haynes enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick90
Rnd3
Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots open.
Pick94
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
A reach on Khyree Jackson in No. 94; the board had better options right there. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick98
Rnd3
Darius Robinson
Value said wait; Darius Robinson in pick No. 98 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Pick132
Rnd4
James Williams
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Williams. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick176
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs at No. 176 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick209
Rnd6
Isaiah Neyor
This one needs a full-page explanation: Isaiah Neyor in Round 6, Pick 34, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick214
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas in pick No. 214 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
A premium they did not need to pay, Jase McClellan a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick222
Rnd7
Myles Jones
They took Myles Jones at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jawhar Jordan
Jawhar Jordan at the 249th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
