Markdel80yahoocom DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers kept it disciplined and banked a B-. The 49ers torched the value chart for Tanor Bortolini, taking him 42 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Max Melton
Max Melton at No. 63 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick94
Rnd3
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at pick 94 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick123
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
Isaac Guerendo slipping to the Round 4 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick130
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha at slot 130 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick132
Rnd4
Mason McCormick
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Mason McCormick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick175
Rnd5
Tanor Bortolini
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tanor Bortolini well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick211
Rnd6
Curtis Jacobs
They read the board right and Curtis Jacobs was the payoff at the 211th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick215
Rnd6
Trey Knox
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Knox in the 215th overall pick, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick232
Rnd7
Elijah Jones
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Elijah Jones in slot 232, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick251
Rnd7
Jawhar Jordan
They paid a round early for Jawhar Jordan in Round 7, Pick 31, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
