Jayarea24 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B-. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Solomon Byrd at No. 211 is 46 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
However the rest shakes out, Dixon at that price is a win they earned. It is not that Newton is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 31st pick they get protection for the quarterback, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
They took Zach Frazier at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Caelen Carson
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Caelen Carson. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick124
Rnd4
Josh Newton
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Josh Newton at cornerback with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
Pick131
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams at pick No. 131 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell in pick 133 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick176
Rnd6
Tykee Smith
A slide stopped in slot 176, with Tykee Smith worth more than the price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick211
Rnd6
Solomon Byrd
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Solomon Byrd. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick215
Rnd6
Johnny Dixon
Circle this one: Johnny Dixon at No. 215 is a fall that decides a draft. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Whittington went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
