Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D-.

The 49ers went off the board in a big way for Keilan Robinson, 58 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Put together, it is a D-.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Newton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback.

That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Dixon at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Nate Wiggins
In No. 18 they get a sticky cover corner. More want than need.
Pick31 Rnd1 Graham Barton
Good price on Graham Barton in the 31st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Worthy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick63 Rnd2 Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro in pick 63 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick80 Rnd3 Ja'Lynn Polk
Ja'Lynn Polk at pick No. 80 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94 Rnd3 Brandon Dorlus
Brandon Dorlus at the 94th overall pick is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick97 Rnd3 Blake Fisher
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Blake Fisher. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick115 Rnd4 Maason Smith
Nothing to complain about; Maason Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cedric Gray at No. 124 is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick131 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell at pick No. 131 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick133 Rnd4 Josh Newton
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Josh Newton while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
Pick149 Rnd5 Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen at Round 5, Pick 13 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick176 Rnd6 Tanor Bortolini
They paid up for Tanor Bortolini at the 176th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick211 Rnd6 Evan Williams
They paid sticker price for Evan Williams in slot 211, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick215 Rnd6 Johnny Dixon
You do not let a cornerback like Johnny Dixon reach slot 215 and blink. They did not. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick251 Rnd7 Keilan Robinson
Keilan Robinson at Round 7, Pick 31 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
