RJ DRAFTING FOR THECowboys
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Bassa should have been long gone. The Cowboys pounced, and earned a B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Jeffrey Bassa, the No. 122 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 209th pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will need Caldwell to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In No. 12 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker at the 44th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
A slide stopped in pick No. 76, with TreVeyon Henderson worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick148
Rnd5
Savion Williams
They robbed the room for Savion Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick168
Rnd5
Nazir Stackhouse
Nazir Stackhouse in the 168th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick170
Rnd5
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at slot 170 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171
Rnd5
Connor Colby
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Connor Colby. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick187
Rnd6
O'Donnell Fortune
O'Donnell Fortune in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa in pick 209 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jamaree Caldwell
A wild overpay on Jamaree Caldwell in slot 247, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
