Draft Grade — Bears

FutureA-
Grand theft in the 170th overall pick: the Bears steal Smith and grade out a A-. The real work happened on the phones. The Bears fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
Getting Smith where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting Orhorhoro proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Jared Verse and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In No. 9 they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick12
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In slot 12 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick37
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
A wild overpay on Ruke Orhorhoro in Round 2, Pick 5, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in the 69th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick101
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
They paid up for Braelon Allen at pick 101 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick111
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams at pick No. 111 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick123
Rnd4
Javon Foster
By-the-book stuff, Javon Foster at the 123rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick143
Rnd5
Johnny Wilson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Johnny Wilson in pick 143. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick170
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
Taking Tykee Smith in Round 5, Pick 34 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick189
Rnd6
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A straight-up fair deal on Zion Tupuola-Fetui at slot 189, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
