The phones were a trap the Vikings kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A F, plain and simple.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The Driskell pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Vikings indulged a want in Melton while a need in wide receiver and tight end stayed open.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. Lassiter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kamari Lassiter in No. 40 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
T'Vondre Sweat in slot 42 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 8 on Max Melton with wide receiver and tight end unsolved.
James Williams at the 130th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Sincere Haynesworth at par in the 148th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Ethan Driskell at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Zion Tupuola-Fetui at pick No. 166 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Isaiah Davis in the Round 6 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Myles Cole a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
