Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B
ValueB NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Commanders robbed the room for Vidal. Final grade: B.

It is a puzzling start. The Commanders had tight end, cornerback and other spots to solve and reached instead for Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE, at the 102nd overall pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Vidal pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The cost of the McCarthy reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In No. 2 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36 Rnd2 J.J. McCarthy
A reach for J.J. McCarthy in the Round 2 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick40 Rnd2 JT Tuimoloau
A slide stopped in pick No. 40, with JT Tuimoloau worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick67 Rnd3 Kingsley Suamataia
Value with a capital V on Kingsley Suamataia in slot 67, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in the 100th pick, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102 Rnd4 Cade Stover
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in pick 102 leaves tight end, cornerback and other spots for later.
Pick141 Rnd5 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at Round 5, Pick 5 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick181 Rnd6 Jahdae Barron
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jahdae Barron in pick No. 181. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick223 Rnd7 Kimani Vidal
They will replay Kimani Vidal at slot 223 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
