There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Raiders started one anyway for Tyler Harrell, 166 picks ahead of schedule.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They banked enough surplus on Williams to cover a lot of smaller sins.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Guyton at the 31st pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Haynes in pick 77. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mike Sainristil in pick No. 87 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Blake Fisher in slot 98, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for Jordan Travis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They let James Williams come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 11. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jordan Jefferson at slot 176 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on Jawhar Jordan at No. 191, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tyler Harrell in the 221st overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jalen Green at the 231st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
