FutureA+
The Patriots checked most of the boxes and earned a B. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Patriots reached some 145 spots for Nick Nash, and value like that does not grow back.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Taaffe. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Shavon Revel Jr.
In pick 19 they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick39
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
A reach on Aireontae Ersery in the 39th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick53
Rnd2
Kyle Kennard
Kyle Kennard at slot 53 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick70
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
Taking Tyler Warren in the 70th pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick79
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
A premium they did not need to pay, Tez Johnson a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick83
Rnd3
Hollin Pierce
Value said wait; Hollin Pierce in the Round 3 slot says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick106
Rnd4
Nick Nash
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Nick Nash well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick115
Rnd4
Jaeden Roberts
They reached into another round for Jaeden Roberts, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick141
Rnd5
Carson Schwesinger
They let Carson Schwesinger come to them and pounced at the 141st overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick187
Rnd6
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin at slot 187 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick208
Rnd6
Nohl Williams
Nohl Williams at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick213
Rnd6
Michael Taaffe
They will replay Michael Taaffe at pick No. 213 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick221
Rnd7
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at Round 7, Pick 7 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick223
Rnd7
Elijah Arroyo
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Elijah Arroyo in pick 223, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick235
Rnd7
Nick Martin
Nick Martin in No. 235 is fair value, right on his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick248
Rnd7
RJ Harvey
They talked themselves into RJ Harvey at Round 7, Pick 34, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
