lajoijoh000 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
C+
ValueD+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers land in the muddy middle: C+. The 49ers went off the board in a big way for Michael Barrett, 125 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Wilson. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
If Kingsley Suamataia and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Kingsley Suamataia
In the 27th pick they get protection for the quarterback, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59
Rnd2
Amarius Mims
Amarius Mims in Round 2, Pick 27 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick90
Rnd3
Zach Frazier
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zach Frazier. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick98
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice slipping to No. 98 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick127
Rnd4
Frank Gore Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Frank Gore Jr. this early at slot 127. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick177
Rnd6
Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson in pick No. 177 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick205
Rnd6
Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil in pick 205 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick213
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at the 213th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick215
Rnd6
Storm Duck
A big swing on Storm Duck at Round 6, Pick 40, well ahead of any board in the building. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick248
Rnd7
Michael Barrett
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Michael Barrett well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
