A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a C-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Collin Schlee at slot 213 is 58 spots clear of where he belonged.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They will answer for taking safety early while interior defensive lineman and linebacker went begging. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Hit on Amarius Mims and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In pick No. 31 they get protection for the quarterback, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick70
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
They paid a round early for Brenden Rice in pick 70, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at slot 94 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick98
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 35 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick107
Rnd4
Tykee Smith
They read the board right and Tykee Smith was the payoff at the 107th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick131
Rnd4
James Williams
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman and linebacker still to address, they spent No. 131 on James Williams, a safety they were not short of.
Pick143
Rnd5
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick No. 143 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick177
Rnd6
Jacob Cowing
No drama and no debate, Jacob Cowing went about where he belonged in pick 177. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick185
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Xavier Thomas well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick209
Rnd6
Brevyn Spann-Ford
A big swing on Brevyn Spann-Ford at slot 209, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick213
Rnd6
Collin Schlee
They reached into another round for Collin Schlee, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jarquez Hunter
Jarquez Hunter at the 252nd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
