Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
The Commanders cashed the board's mistake on Milton III: A-.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Joe Milton III, the No. 151 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 181. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Jordan Morgan
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36 Rnd2 Bralen Trice
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bralen Trice in the 36th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick40 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
A reach for Tyler Guyton in pick 40; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick56 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Xavier Legette at slot 56 is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick67 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in Round 3, Pick 3. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick99 Rnd3 Maason Smith
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
Pick100 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in the 100th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick102 Rnd4 Donovan Edwards
No drama and no debate, Donovan Edwards went about where he belonged in pick No. 102. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick141 Rnd5 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick166 Rnd5 Justin Eboigbe
They jumped the gun on Justin Eboigbe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick181 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
Taking Joe Milton III in No. 181 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick223 Rnd7 Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern at the 223rd pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
