There is conviction, and then there is this. The Raiders took Taylen Green a full 100 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The final tally is a middling C+.
Carson Beck is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Getting Hampton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
Carson Beck at Round 1, Pick 7 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Elic Ayomanor. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Tyler Booker at No. 69 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Omarion Hampton in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A conviction pick on Deone Walker at slot 105 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
They reached into another round for Taylen Green, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Raheim Sanders at pick 185 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Barrett Carter in Round 6, Pick 37 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Julian Fleming this early at the 214th overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Azareye'h Thomas at No. 224 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
