The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Torrence. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. If McCarthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.

In slot 4 they get a long-term answer under center, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Taking T'Vondre Sweat in pick No. 66 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Javon Baker at the 108th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy little value on James Williams in Round 4, Pick 29, a step better than break-even. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the Round 5 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Jaylin Simpson in pick 167, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No drama and no debate, Layden Robinson went about where he belonged in the 177th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Justin Rogers at No. 230 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Somehow Ro Torrence was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
