Grand theft in pick 252: the 49ers steal Johnson and grade out a D-. Somebody took the 49ers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. Put together, it is a D-.
They will need Gray to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Johnson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
No drama and no debate, Troy Fautanu went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 4. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick37
Rnd2
Nate Wiggins
Nate Wiggins in the 37th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick63
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at the 63rd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick68
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
They took Leonard Taylor III at par in slot 68, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Fair-plus on Christian Mahogany, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick98
Rnd3
Luke Lachey
They paid a round early for Luke Lachey in the 98th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick100
Rnd3
Spencer Rattler
They did well to land Spencer Rattler in pick 100, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jaylon Carlies
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaylon Carlies a notch or two before his time. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick213
Rnd6
Brevyn Spann-Ford
They read the board right and Brevyn Spann-Ford was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 38. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick215
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
They reached a country mile for Joshua Gray at pick No. 215, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick252
Rnd7
Cornelius Johnson
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Cornelius Johnson in the 252nd pick, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
