jdthree DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Steelers. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Carson Steele at the 199th overall pick, a reach of 51 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Landing Tampa that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Interior defensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. More want than need.
Pick53
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
A slide stopped in the 53rd overall pick, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick85
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Of all the spots to shop, they chose offensive lineman. Sedrick Van Pran in pick No. 85 leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots for later.
Pick120
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg in pick 120 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick121
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
They paid sticker price for Cole Bishop in the 121st pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick199
Rnd6
Carson Steele
They talked themselves into Carson Steele at Round 6, Pick 24, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick242
Rnd7
Evan Anderson
Evan Anderson at Round 7, Pick 22 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
