You can hear the double-takes from here. The Raiders took Zion Logue at the 229th overall pick, roughly 61 spots before his name belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They banked enough surplus on McCaffrey to cover a lot of smaller sins. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 44 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kingsley Suamataia at slot 77 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Dominick Puni at the 111th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Chau Smith-Wade at No. 128 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Dylan Laube in the 147th overall pick, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Luke McCaffrey at the 207th pick is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They barely believed it either: Curtis Jacobs still on the board at the Round 7 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Value said wait; Zion Logue in the 229th overall pick says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
