Nobody else had Tyler Owens anywhere near No. 224. The Eagles did, by 31 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The L'Jarius Sneed pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nothing to complain about; Edgerrin Cooper went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
They reached into another round for Xavier Legette, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Fair-plus on Cooper Beebe, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cam Hart. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
AJ Barner in pick No. 172 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jase McClellan a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Tyler Owens in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
