There is conviction, and then there is this. The Vikings took Brevyn Spann-Ford a full 73 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Vikings indulged a want in Melton while a need in safety, offensive lineman and other spots stayed open.
On value alone, Nix makes the weekend a net positive.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
Nothing to complain about; Chop Robinson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Bo Nix at slot 42 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in No. 65, where Edgerrin Cooper graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
The board fumbled Josh Newton all the way to Round 4, Pick 1, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A straight-up fair deal on Ray Davis at the 103rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Darius Robinson in the 109th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 130 on Max Melton with safety, offensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Luke McCaffrey at slot 145 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brevyn Spann-Ford this early at Round 5, Pick 21. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
