Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D+
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Cowboys bled value on every deal, hence the D+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Brady Cook in pick No. 168.

The Higgins steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
A slide stopped in the 13th overall pick, with Ashton Jeanty worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick33 Rnd2 Luther Burden III
Luther Burden III at pick No. 33 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick78 Rnd3 Malachi Moore
Good price on Malachi Moore in the 78th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick104 Rnd4 Danny Stutsman
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Danny Stutsman in Round 4, Pick 3, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick168 Rnd5 Brady Cook
Brady Cook at pick 168 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick170 Rnd5 Chris Paul Jr.
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 170 is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick171 Rnd5 Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick189 Rnd6 Jay Higgins
Taking Jay Higgins in No. 189 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick209 Rnd6 Thor Griffith
This one needs a full-page explanation: Thor Griffith in pick 209, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick248 Rnd7 Garrett Dellinger
A reach for Garrett Dellinger in Round 7, Pick 32; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
