FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Cowboys for Smith: B. The rest of the league will want that one back. Brashard Smith tumbling to the Cowboys in slot 187 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. They will need Williams to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Luther Burden III
In pick No. 17 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
They paid up for Tyleik Williams at pick 44 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick49
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
You do not let a running back like Omarion Hampton reach Round 2, Pick 17 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jalon Walker
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in No. 76, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick118
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in the 118th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick148
Rnd5
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at the 148th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick168
Rnd5
Cam Skattebo
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at slot 168 is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick170
Rnd5
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick171
Rnd5
Billy Bowman Jr.
They barely believed it either: Billy Bowman Jr. still on the board at the 171st pick. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick187
Rnd6
Brashard Smith
The board fumbled Brashard Smith all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at the 209th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jake Briningstool
A tight end of that caliber at No. 247 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
