Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Tahj Brooks at the Round 5 slot is 25 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. That Egbuka pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get a lockdown presence outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Emeka Egbuka still on the board at pick No. 45. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cooper DeJean in the 58th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 34. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
James Williams at pick 137 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Ashton Gillotte at the 157th pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Tahj Brooks in the 172nd pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ricky Pearsall well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steele Chambers in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
