FutureA+
A passer of the future in Williams, and a D+, for the Bears. Somebody took the Bears to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Jones.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
Caleb Williams at pick 1 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick28
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In pick No. 28 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick53
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 53 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
A clean, defensible pick in the 75th overall pick with a little surplus value in Payton Wilson. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick110
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at No. 110 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick121
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
No edge and no loss on Darius Robinson in the 121st pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick128
Rnd4
Dillon Johnson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dillon Johnson at the Round 4 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick146
Rnd5
Kamal Hadden
Kamal Hadden is a better player than Round 5, Pick 10 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick210
Rnd6
Christian Jones
Christian Jones in No. 210 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick232
Rnd7
Zakhari Franklin
The board had Zakhari Franklin higher than the Round 7 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
