Asides DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers

FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B-. The Gabe Hall selection is the head-turner. The 49ers reached 92 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. The Devonshire pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Graham Barton
In No. 31 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ruke Orhorhoro. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Foster
This one needs a full-page explanation: Javon Foster in slot 94, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. is a better player than pick 124 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick131
Rnd4
Gabe Hall
A real head-scratcher, Gabe Hall in Round 4, Pick 31 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133
Rnd4
Erick All
A big swing on Erick All at the 133rd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick176
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
They paid up for Cornelius Johnson at No. 176 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick211
Rnd6
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
Javontae Jean-Baptiste in Round 6, Pick 36 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick215
Rnd6
M.J. Devonshire
M.J. Devonshire in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick251
Rnd7
Tyler Owens
They paid sticker price for Tyler Owens in the 251st overall pick, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
