Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesC FutureA+
Quarterback settled, McCarthy in the fold, and a B for the Patriots.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

Reaching for Tupuola-Fetui left real value on the table behind him. The Jackson steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In slot 26 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
No edge and no loss on Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick57 Rnd2 Braden Fiske
They took Braden Fiske at par in the 57th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick68 Rnd3 Jermaine Burton
Jermaine Burton slid further than he should have, and pick No. 68 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick103 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
Nice patience on Dominick Puni, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 3. It fills a real need, too.
Pick115 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson at the 115th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick125 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at No. 125 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick137 Rnd5 Josh Newton
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Josh Newton at No. 137 is the proof. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick180 Rnd6 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at slot 180 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick231 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
Fair-plus on Frank Gore Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
