Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Dorian Singer got past him. The Cardinals do not have to explain a thing at the Round 7 slot. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
With quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on defensive back is the choice that costs them. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Raym pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 15th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A want over a need in the Round 2 slot: Cooper DeJean adds a defensive back while quarterback, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
Jermaine Burton at slot 66 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Sedrick Van Pran at pick 74 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They did well to land McKinnley Jackson in the 79th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jamon Dumas-Johnson in pick No. 120 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jason Marshall Jr. in Round 4, Pick 33 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Steal is underselling it; Roman Wilson at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Andrew Raym at No. 169 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Landon Jackson slipping to Round 7, Pick 3 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They will replay Jordan Whittington at the 224th pick for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Beaux Collins higher than slot 234, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Dorian Singer in pick 241 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
