The Bears found their guy under center in McCarthy: D. The Bears spent real capital to be 44 picks early on Tanor Bortolini, and the board is going to hold them to it. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Jared Verse
Jared Verse at slot 20 is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick25
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In No. 25 they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick41
Rnd2
Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall at the 41st overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick58
Rnd2
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker at Round 2, Pick 26 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick75
Rnd3
Isaac Guerendo
Isaac Guerendo at pick No. 75 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick76
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick87
Rnd3
Cam Hart
Cam Hart at slot 87 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick111
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
A reach on Johnny Wilson in pick No. 111; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick116
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
Value said wait; Theo Johnson in the 116th overall pick says they were not listening. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick123
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at pick 123 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick143
Rnd5
Mason McCormick
They paid up for Mason McCormick at the 143rd pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick173
Rnd5
Tanor Bortolini
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tanor Bortolini this early at No. 173. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
