The board owed the Bears one, and it paid up: Michael Penix Jr., the No. 9 name on the board, sitting there at the 34th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.

It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
