The Bears found their guy under center in Williams: D-. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Bears, and the value they bled adds up to real damage.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They are betting Thomas Jr. proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In slot 1 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
Pick20
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a No. 1 receiver, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Kamren Kinchens
Kamren Kinchens at the 38th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick75
Rnd3
Blake Corum
No drama and no debate, Blake Corum went about where he belonged in No. 75. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick84
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at the 84th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick111
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
By-the-book stuff, Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 111 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick123
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at pick 123 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick143
Rnd5
Jaheim Bell
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaheim Bell. It adds depth where they could use a little.
