The Bears fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-. Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Bears came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Newton. The Bears indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open.
The Budda Baker pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
In the end it comes back to Malik Nabers, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In pick No. 4 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick21
Rnd1
JC Latham
In pick 21 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
Nothing to complain about; JT Tuimoloau went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick36
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
A tidy little value on Tyler Nubin in No. 36, a step better than break-even. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 66 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick67
Rnd3
Blake Corum
They went early on Blake Corum in the 67th pick, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75
Rnd3
Josh Newton
Josh Newton in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick85
Rnd3
Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 85th overall pick on Maason Smith with interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Pick100
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley slipping to the 100th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick110
Rnd4
Spencer Rattler
A quiet steal in the 110th overall pick: Spencer Rattler for less than the market said. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick125
Rnd4
Isaiah Adams
They did well to land Isaiah Adams in slot 125, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick146
Rnd5
Nehemiah Pritchett
Value with a capital V on Nehemiah Pritchett in Round 5, Pick 10, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick186
Rnd6
Ben Bywater
Ben Bywater in No. 186 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick232
Rnd7
Isaiah Williams
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Isaiah Williams in pick No. 232. The roster fit checks out.
