Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C+
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureD
A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Patriots get a C+.

You can draft well and still miss the point. The Patriots did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to interior defensive lineman, which was the need that mattered most. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Puni. They are betting Tupuola-Fetui proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

Adding Daniel Bellinger by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

So much rides on Malik Nabers that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick6 Rnd1 Malik Nabers
In pick 6 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In No. 27 they get a building block for the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
A straight-up fair deal on Adonai Mitchell at the 34th pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick39 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 39th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It fills a real need, too.
Pick46 Rnd2 J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy at slot 46 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick68 Rnd3 Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes at the Round 3 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick104 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
Nice patience on Dominick Puni, who had no business lasting to pick No. 104. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick109 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in Round 4, Pick 9 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick136 Rnd4 Josh Newton
Josh Newton slipping to pick No. 136 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick140 Rnd5 Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade in Round 5, Pick 4 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick182 Rnd6 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A conviction pick on Zion Tupuola-Fetui at No. 182 that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick229 Rnd7 Javontae Jean-Baptiste
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
